How to protect an MT4/MT5 trading account: which rules matter?

SentinelleTrader team · · 3 min

Protecting a trading account does not mean finding one magic rule. Separate position risk, combined account exposure, session limits and the reliability of the mechanism that enforces them.

In this guide
  1. What does trading account protection mean?
  2. First layer: protect each position
  3. Second layer: set account and session boundaries
  4. Third layer: enforce the decision

What does trading account protection mean?

Risk protection cannot remove the possibility of loss. It means deciding in advance which exposure you accept, measuring changes during the session and specifying an action when a limit is reached. This is the practical side of trading risk management.

Before choosing a tool, state the exact problem. Do you want to limit the loss of one position, avoid several correlated positions, stop after a daily loss or prevent another entry after multiple stop-losses? No single function answers every question. The French regulator AMF also warns that CFD leverage magnifies losses as well as gains.

First layer: protect each position

Position sizing and an exit condition defined before entry frame the intended risk of a trade. A stop-loss is an exit instruction: triggering depends on market conditions, and the execution price can differ from the requested level. It does not by itself set a daily account-loss limit or prevent you from trading again immediately.

Also review pending orders and open positions in other instruments. Two positions with individual stops may respond to the same market movement; viewing tickets in isolation can hide combined exposure. MetaTrader’s official documentation, linked below, describes its order execution and management functions.

Second layer: set account and session boundaries

A daily loss limit, a drawdown cap and a maximum number of stop-losses address different risks. One large loss can use the monetary allowance before the SL counter is reached. Several small losses might trigger the counter without exhausting the monetary limit. Specify the calculation reference, treatment of floating losses, time zone and reset point.

Without suggesting a universal threshold, if your plan includes a session stopping condition, write down what triggers it, what happens to positions already open and when a new session may begin. You should still understand the rule when you are rushed or frustrated. For the calculation, see the daily-loss-limit guide and the daily drawdown guide.

Third layer: enforce the decision

An alert informs you, but you can ignore it. An Expert Advisor running in your own terminal requires working automated-trading permissions and an operational environment. Remote protection removes the need to leave your personal computer on, but it still depends on broker connectivity and order execution. Check that the protection is actually active, rather than merely entered into a form.

With SentinelleTrader, you choose the limits included in your plan, and the service monitors the connected account. While a lock is active, every new position is automatically closed until the planned reset. This is different from guaranteed broker rejection before an order opens: delay and slippage remain possible. Read what happens after a loss limit for the detailed behaviour.

How should you check protection before a session?

  1. Confirm the correct MT4 or MT5 account and broker server are connected.
  2. Review the daily loss, SL count, trading hours and reset available in your plan.
  3. Check protection status and any connection errors on the dashboard.
  4. Review open positions and pending orders, including when you trade from a phone.
  5. Keep a manual stopping procedure if the service or connection fails.

Do not create a real loss merely to test a lock. Protection helps enforce rules you chose; it guarantees neither an exact exit price, nor compliance with a prop firm’s terms, nor profitability. If you trade a challenge, see the prop-firm-specific checks. SentinelleTrader plans describe the available functions.
